I have finished doing an informal reading inventory and I have determined the student I am working with has:
Word I.D. - first grade
Listening Comp. - primer
Silent Reading Comp. - preprimer
For my goal, I want to increase each of these areas by at least one level for the year. My question is: What should my objectives be?
Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks,
Lee

2 Questions
Hello Literacy Campers,
I have a couple of questions.
1. When you make cloze/maze passages, how do you decide which words to leave out?
2. If you don't know the reading level of text you want to use with a student, how do you figure it out?
Thanks. It was great to see many of you last week at the 2 day follow-up. I hope there are more opportunities for us to get back together in the future.
Take care,
Lee

Happy Halloween!! :)
Just wanted to check in to see how everyone's year is going so far?? My kids are so excited for Halloween, so today the OT that I share my room with and I decorated our rooms to look more Halloweenish! Kids should be excited come Monday!! Anyone go to Closing the Gap?? I so wanted to go, but it didn't work out for me this year.
Here's a joke for you all! Being from a farming community, I thought it was kinda funny:
A farm boy accidentally overturned his wagonload of corn. The farmer who lived nearby heard the noise and yelled over to the boy, "Hey Willis, forget your troubles. Come visit with us. I'll help you gidder up later."
"That's mighty nice of you," Willis answered, "but I don't think Pa would like me to."
"Aw come on boy," the farmer insisted.
"Well okay," the boy finally agreed, and added, "but Pa won't like it."
After a hearty dinner, Willis thanked his host. "I feel a lot better now, but I know Pa aint gonna like it none, he's gonna be mighty upset."
"Don't be foolish! I promised I'ld help with yer wagon." the neighbor said with a smile. "By the way, where is he?"
"Under the wagon."

See you all soon!
H all!
Looking forward to seeing my camp buddies on November 1 and 2 at the MDE building!
I gave my first literacy lecture to our SLP graduate students a couple weeks ago. It went very well. It's surprising what they view as "literate" and "literacy." I think I may actually have some impact here! Linda

Another Website of Interest
I think we told everyone about Barb's Highland Park website during the camp, but this is a reminder that you ought to check it out as an example of (1) what you might do with your own kids, (2) ways you can augment the interest and learning of your students (and yourself) with free technologies.

Check out these web sites!
Thanks, Derrick, for setting up this blog!
In case you haven't had a chance to check, Dave has great information on his web site. He adds to his social bookmarks regularly and is going to be writing a literacy blog. You can even email him about topics you'd like him to address.
You can also find valuable information from Karen's web site. As an example, Gretchen Hanser, who directs the Deaf Blind Project, has a wonderful page with many downloadable materials. Click on this link to view it.
I look forward to seeing everyone in November.

Literacy Camp 2008
Way to go Derrick! Glad to see we have a group blog. Here's some news you all can share with colleagues and families. We just settled on literacy camp dates for next summer: July 25-31 (Thursday to Thursday). Adults participants come in for instruction like you did July 25 and 26. Kids arrive July 26 and literacy camp runs July 27-31. Karen is going to be unable to squeeze it in her hectic schedule, but she is being ably replaced by Sally Clendon this summer. Sally finished her spectacular graduate career with Karen last year and is now working at the Sydney University in Australia. She has attended and co-taught all of the courses/camps we do on a regular basis and is extremely knowledgeable. Thanks to Barb for coordinating again, and Roger for figuring out the schedule.
